Have a great October!
David Parker
GSMR President
Good friends conveyed good vibes as several LDC members joined a bumper crop of GSMR folks at our September 20 meeting at Bay Breeze, totaling over 42 in attendance. It was probably our largest meeting since the pandemic.
Several items of interest were addressed, including future club activities and membership, with a survey handed out. The survey will soon be available to all members via email.
Other highlights included President David’s mystery hubcap quiz and the upcoming joint club picnic at Harmon Field on the 15th (see flyer on pg. 3).
But the real highlight of the evening was our “Lucky Dog” winner of two months ago, Jane Opliger’s presentation of her and hubby’s 11-year career truckin’ all sorts of automobiles around the country in their classy 3 decker auto transporter. Their trophy winning rig has been displayed in magazines, calendars and other media, featuring an air-brushed montage covering the entire vehicle inside and out.
An outstanding adventure and a very enjoyable talk.

“First Car” overshadowed by more popular sibling.
Ask Tom Somerville about his first car, a 1967 Fathom Blue Pontiac
Tempest 4-dr equipped with Pontiac’s 3.8L in-line 6 ,and he immediately turns to his second car for obvious reasons. —Ed
“The Green Goat” —Tom Somerville
I had been tooling around the Washington D.C. area for a while in my first car, a ‘67 Pontiac Tempest with an overhead cam 6, for a couple years when I saw an
ad for a ’69 Pontiac GTO for sale. It was the summer of ’73 and as much as I liked the Tempest, I wanted more power, so I went and checked the Goat out. The car was nicely optioned and appeared to be in good shape. The price seemed fair at $1,800 so I drove it home. It was Verdoro green with a dark green interior, white vinyl top, hideaway headlights, a 4 speed with console, Hurst shifter and a hood tach. It had the standard 400 cubic inch 350 horsepower Pontiac V8 with a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and dual exhaust. To a car crazy 17-year-old it was Heaven on Earth.
Soon after I got it home, I noticed that the engine wasn’t running as well as I thought it should. I quickly found out that all the pushrods were bent. Apparently, the previous owner had missed a shift or two! After replacing the pushrods, I installed an adjustable rev limiter under the dash. The wheels were next. Out with the factory Rally 2 wheels and in with chrome Cragars with L60s mounted in the rear and G70s up front. I also added Gabriel Hijacker air shocks, an FM converter, 8-track player with Radio Shack bookshelf speakers in back, and a CB radio. My CB handle was Green Goat.
I was rear-ended at a stoplight in the mid-seventies and the insurance company declared it totaled. I kept the car and had the frame straightened and new quarter panels installed. The new paint was a Cadillac green with extra metal flakes added. Hey, this was the ‘70s! The car also lost its white vinyl top at this point. Diametrically opposed to the way GTOs are pampered today, it was my only car and I drove it in all kinds of weather including snow and ice mixed with plenty of salt. I parked it on the busy street in front of my house for years and thought nothing of it.
I had the car for 11 years and a lot of good times but the notion of holding on to it never crossed my mind. The car was getting pretty rusty and tired by the late ‘70s when I started hanging around with some sports car guys. Not long after, I bought my friend’s ’68 Austin Healey Sprite and in the early ‘80s a ’75 Porsche 914 came my way. The Porsche handled like a go-cart, sipped gas and was a blast to drive. I rarely drove the old Goat during this period. At least I put it in the back yard and covered it up. In 1984 I had the bright idea to sell the GTO and the 914 to buy a new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. The Z was nice, but you know what they say about hindsight! I still miss the old green Goat and the Porsche.
Here is a picture of me and my ’71 that I bought in 2000 to finally replace the green one.

In the mid 1930s, a General Motors Styling researcher viewed ancestral arms of the Scottish Buick family. The interpretation of that “coat of arms” soon became Buick’s symbol and has been used in various forms ever since, evolving into the three stylized arms in 1960 and found abstracted in a circle used today.
